The Couple

I started watching the series in Hong Kong in 2007. At first, I wasn't very interested in Black Jack because of the animation style, too childish. Upon watching more and more episodes, I found that it was actually pretty good. I started watching some uploaded episodes on youtube.com and veoh.com, at the end, I was completely obssessed with this couple. A genius surgeon, saves a rejected life, shaped her into a child's body despite her being 18 years old. Wow, what a story.

I think in general, a lot of people do not watch this anime because it looks very childish, and also I have to admit some stories are not that good, but generally they are. The anime from 2003-2005 has some differences between the anime and the manga. It seemed that the director has taken off some of the seriousness of certain subjects, Like in episode 21-22 a 1 hour special, the story of the girl who had an eye donated from a dead woman, she keeps seeing a man everywhere, in the manga, The Man she sees was a killer after raping her, the image was implanted in the eye, but in the recent anime, the man was her boyfriend who failed to save the women from an accident. Hopefully, viewers should look at both the anime and the manga to better appreciate this series.

However, the deal is, that viewers should not base the relationship only on the OVAs from the 90s. In Black Jack episodes from 2003-2006, directed by Osamu's son, the relationship between Black Jack and Pinoko is more obvious.

Throughout the episodes, Pinoko is often showering BJ with her affections, sometimes he takes them seriously, sometimes he just wants her to shut up. Either way, a lot of people consider her as his " daughter " or a kid, as he often does. But in Episode 22, " Pinoko's plans for adulthood, Black Jack finally seems to be accepting her as an adult.

But why do I consider them as a couple?

First of all, I don't consider Black Jack to be really her daughter. The reason is, Pinoko is saved by him. He did not give her life, she already had a life before. He basically took what she had , organs and body parts and put it in an artificial body. He couldn't have given her an adult body because the tumor wasn't big enough so that she could develop bigger and more mature organs. So he had to put her in a smaller body. So in my opinion, he's not her father, even though she really wants to have a romantic relationship with him, I think he knows it's impossible, he doesn't want to hurt her, so he doesn't deny it, but we can all say that he really cares about her a lot.
